Police in North Carolina have arrested Richard Lynn Upright, a former Christian school teacher, after investigators say he created explicit images involving minors using artificial intelligence and photo-editing tools.

Upright, 56, was arrested on February 27, 2026, and charged with 10 counts of second-degree sexual exploitation of a minor, according to the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities say the investigation began after the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children received a cybertip and alerted law enforcement.  Investigators later executed search warrants and allegedly discovered numerous explicit images on electronic devices connected to Upright.

Investigators allege Upright used artificial intelligence and digital editing tools to place minors’ faces onto explicit images

Who Is Richard Lynn Upright?

Richard Lynn Upright is a former teacher at Vandalia Christian School in Greensboro, North Carolina. According to investigators, Upright was charged with 10 counts of second-degree sexual exploitation of a minor.

Authorities allege that many of the images involved digitally manipulated photographs of minors, created using artificial intelligence technology and photo-editing software.

School officials later confirmed that Upright was terminated following his arrest.  The school is cooperating with the ongoing investigation.

The investigation into the case remains ongoing. As with all criminal matters, Upright is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

Charges Filed Against Richard Lynn Upright

Prosecutors charged Upright with 10 counts of second-degree sexual exploitation of a minor, a Class E felony in North Carolina

Each count carries the potential for significant prison time. Upright’s sentences can reach more than a decade per offense depending on the circumstances and criminal history.

The investigation remains ongoing.

School Liability and the Duty to Protect Students

When allegations of child exploitation involve teachers or school staff, the impact can be particularly devastating.

Parents trust schools to provide safe learning environments for their children. Teachers hold positions of authority and influence, often interacting with students daily in classrooms, extracurricular activities, and mentorship roles.

When that trust is violated, institutions may face scrutiny regarding whether they:

  • Properly screened employees during hiring
  • Conducted appropriate background checks
  • Responded appropriately to prior complaints or warning signs
  • Implemented safeguards to protect students

Schools or educational institutions may face civil liability if failures in supervision, reporting, or institutional oversight allowed abuse or exploitation to occur.

Civil lawsuits can help survivors pursue accountability and obtain financial resources for recovery and healing.
