Maryland Update

The Maryland House of Delegates and Senate have approved the Child Victims Act of 2023 which removes the statute of limitations, or time period, that victims have to pursue civil cases against perpetrators and organizations responsible for the abuse. Under the new law, victims may seek compensation for the damages they suffered against both public and private businesses, organizations, and institutions. While there is a cap or maximum amount of “non-economic” damages that can be recovered ($890,000 public /$1,500,000 private), that cap only applies to single incidents and does not apply to economic damages such as medical bills and lost wages.
Cases that are viable under the Child Victim’s Act often involve abuse that happened many years ago.
