Rhett Hintze, Charged With Failure to Report Child Abuse.

Perpetrators

In the unfortunate and distressing case involving Rhett Hintze, a stake president within the Church of Jesus Christ and Latter-Day Saints (LDS) in New Cumberland, Pennsylvania, victims must be aware of their rights and the legal avenues available to them. At Andreozzi + Foote, we understand the impact that failure to report child abuse can have on children. Because of this, we provide support and representation for victims seeking justice.

Who is Rhett Hintze:

Rhett Hintze, as a stake president overseeing several LDS locations in Pennsylvania, faces charges of “failure to report or refer” allegations against Shawn Cory Gooden. Gooden is another LDS official and Boy Scout leader. In addition, Gooden, was accused of sexually assaulting at least two victims in the 1990s and early 2000s, faced charges in both Virginia (2022) and Berks County, Pennsylvania (2023).

Pennsylvania State Police indicate that an additional assault was alleged to have occurred at a state park. It was reported that Gooden and the victim had disclosed the sexual assault to Hintze as early as October 2020. Under Pennsylvania’s Child Protective Services Law, Hintze, in his role as a stake president, is a mandated reporter—a category of individuals who must report suspected child abuse.

Failure to Report and Its Consequences:

Hintze’s failure to report the abuse to the proper authorities raises significant concerns about the potential impact on the victims involved. As a result, the failure to report child abuse can perpetuate a cycle of harm, preventing timely intervention and protection for vulnerable individuals.

Understanding Your Rights as a Victim:

If you have experienced sexual abuse or assault, it is essential to know your rights and take steps toward seeking justice. Subsequently, as a victim, you have the right to:

  • Confidentiality: Your identity and case details should be handled with utmost confidentiality throughout the legal process.
  • Support: Seek emotional and psychological support from friends, family, and professionals to aid your healing journey.
  • Legal Representation: You have the right to legal representation to navigate the complexities of the legal system and pursue justice.

Pennsylvania Laws on Child Abuse Reporting:

Pennsylvania has stringent laws regarding child abuse reporting. As a result, mandated reporters, including individuals in religious leadership roles like Hintze, must report suspected child abuse promptly. However, failure to fulfill this obligation may result in legal consequences and perpetuate the risk of victim harm.
