Perpetrators

A former Garfield Middle School art teacher, Amy Dovidio of Pompton Plains, is under arrest for allegations involving sexual conduct with a student. The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office has confirmed the arrest, and Dovidio faces multiple charges including:

  • aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault,
  • endangering the welfare of a child,
  • aggravated criminal sexual contact,
  • and criminal sexual contact.

The incident has sparked outrage and demands for accountability within the Garfield community.

Allegations and Charges:

The accusations against Dovidio came to light on February 10, when law enforcement received a report that she engaged in sexual conduct with a Garfield Middle School student. The charges indicate that the alleged incidents occurred within the middle school building, at a residence in Cedar Grove, and in a vehicle across Bergen, Passaic, and Essex counties.

The timeline of the reported incidents spans several years, with one occurring between January 1, 2015, and June 12, 2018, another between January 1, 2015, and June 15, 2016, and a third between June 13, 2016, and June 12, 2018. These shocking details highlight the need for a thorough investigation and swift legal action.

School District Response:

Interim Garfield Superintendent Nicholas Perrapato and School Board Attorney Brent R. Pohlman have responded to the incident, emphasizing that Garfield has not employed Dovidio since December 31, 2021. The school district will likely face questions about its knowledge of the alleged misconduct during Dovidio’s tenure and its subsequent actions to address it.

Legal Proceedings:

Amy Dovidio’s court appearance is scheduled for Wednesday at 9 a.m. before Judge David Labib. The accused has retained private attorney Joseph Ricci to represent her in court. The legal proceedings will play a crucial role in determining the veracity of the allegations and holding the former teacher accountable if found guilty.
