Justice for Survivors of University Park Church of Christ

Media

Andreozzi + Foote is seeking justice for survivors of sexual abuse by filing a lawsuit against the University Park Church of Christ (formerly Collesville Road Church of Christ) and Warren Berkley under Maryland’s Child Victims Act (CVA). This law, designed to provide survivors with a path to justice, underscores Maryland’s commitment to addressing historical sexual abuse.

The Allegations Against University Park Church of Christ

The plaintiff, identified as John Doe to protect his privacy, is alleging that Warren Berkley, while serving as a youth leader at the church, engaged in sexual misconduct starting in 1987 when the plaintiff was only 13 years old. The complaint asserts that the church failed in its duty to protect children in its care, ignoring red flags and failing to implement child protection measures.

The Impact of the Abuse

The lawsuit details the emotional, physical, and financial toll on the plaintiff:

  • including ongoing trauma
  • the need for therapy and counseling.

These experiences reflect a common pattern seen in survivors of institutional sexual abuse, where trusted figures exploit their positions of authority. The overbearing costs of sexual violence far exceeds any resources provided by assistance programs.

Maryland’s Child Victims Act: A Path to Accountability

The CVA has been instrumental in allowing survivors to come forward, regardless of when the abuse occurred.  Andreozzi + Foote is holding institutions accountable for their negligence and ensuring survivors have the opportunity to heal.
