Moyer, of Stevens, Pennsylvania, reportedly had indecent contact with a 16-year-old following a training session at the fire station on June 14. The teenager was a volunteer with the fire department at the time. According to police, Moyer asked the teen to join him in a secluded area between parked fire apparatuses and used his hands to inappropriately touch the victim. Moyer reportedly touched “the buttocks and back lower torso and pubic region” of the 16-year-old.
The victim later received a text message from a number identified as “Moyer Jr.” that contained acknowledgement of the act and inferred ats to be performed “next time.”
The minor abuse was reported by crew at Durlach-Mount Airy Fire Department
The abuse was allegedly reported to leadership of the fire department by another crew member who had heard that Moyer had contact with the juvenile. The fire department then passed the information along to the police.
Moyer has been released on $25,000 unsecured bail. A preliminary hearing is now scheduled for July 11 in front of District Judge Tony S. Russell.
Unfortunately, it is not uncommon for adults in positions of power and trust to take advantage of their position to abuse victims, like Moyer is alleged to have done in this case. Cases of sexual abuse of children by leaders within their communities have not only resulted in criminal convictions as in this case, but also in civil judgments. It is important that victims receive justice and that those who are responsible for the abuse are held accountable.
