Arizona Clergy Sexual Abuse in the Catholic Church
Arizona’s Catholic Dioceses, like so many around the United States, covered up sexual abuse by its clergy members. As a result, Arizona recognized the state’s civil statute of limitations was too short, and that survivors of clergy sex abuse needed more time to come forward and hold the Church accountable in court.
Legal Changes Mean The Time To Act Is Now
On May 27, 2019, Arizona’s governor signed a bill that opens a 19-month revival window against sexual abuse perpetrators and responsible institutions, including the Catholic Church. Specifically, victims of childhood sexual abuse will have until December 31, 2020 to bring claims. These claims can be brought against persons, like Catholic bishops, who were not the perpetrator of the abuse “if that person knew or otherwise had actual notice of any misconduct that created an unreasonable risk of sexual conduct or sexual contact.”
The time to pursue these cases is very limited, so survivors are encouraged to promptly contact us for a no-fee consultation to discuss their legal options.
