Summary of sexual abuse allegations against Father Joseph Cervantez Briceno:
Father Joseph Cervantez Briceno was put on leave by the Diocese of Phoenix in 1992 after accusations he abused a young boy and girl in the early 1980s. He then went to Mexicali, Mexico, where he served as a priest there. When he was indicted in 2003, Cervantez Briceno met with Mexicali church officials and resigned, telling church leaders he wanted to return to the United States to clear his name.
Cervantez Briceno disappeared then until 2005, when he was captured in Mexicali, Mexico. In 2006, he faced trial for abusing children in Arizona. Six days after his trial began, he pled guilty to two counts of sexual conduct and was sentenced to two years in prison and three years of probation. Father Briceno also had to register as a sex offender.
