The Plaza Academy Executive Director Faces Charges

Perpetrators

In the wake of recent charges against Ward Worley, executive director of The Plaza Academy in Kansas City, for failing to report a sexual assault between students, potential victims must understand their rights and seek justice. Andreozzi + Foote empowers survivors by providing information on their rights and legal recourse.

What Happened at The Plaza Academy:

Ward Worley faces a misdemeanor charge for failing to report a sexual assault between a student under 14 years old and a 17-year-old at The Plaza Academy. The school was notified of the incident on February 27, 2023, but law enforcement was not alerted until May 5, 2023. As a result, the delayed response raises concerns about handling such incidents within the educational institution.

Your Right to Safety:

You have the right to a safe and secure learning environment as a student. In the unfortunate event of sexual assault or abuse, it is essential to know that you are not alone and that there are legal avenues available to seek justice and hold responsible parties accountable.

  • Right to Seek Support: Reach out to supportive individuals, whether friends, family, or counselors. Your well-being is a priority, and seeking emotional support is crucial during such challenging times.
  • Right to Report: If you choose to report the incident, know you have the right to do so without fear of retaliation. Reporting helps initiate investigations and can contribute to a safer environment for you and your peers.

Understanding DESE’s Role:

The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) clarifies that it lacks regulatory authority over private schools. However, if an educator holds an active teaching certificate, DESE can be alerted through a fingerprint match in case of an arrest. In Worley’s case, as of January, he does not have an active teaching certificate with the state.
